On Digital Audio Formats and the Nyquist - Shannon sampling Theorem
On Digital Audio Formats and the Nyquist – Shannon sampling Theorem Vol 8
Hans Polak
In Linear Audio Volume 5 Dr. Hans van Maanen made the case for higher audio sample rates to improve sound reproduction quality. One argument given was that especially transients are not well reproduced with CD redbook equipment. Hans Polak was intrigued by and skeptical about van Maanen’s test results and decided to do his own research. In this article he shows the differences in residual distortion between high- and low sampling rates and the effects of quantizing and dither. His conclusion is that there may be an advantage for higher sampling rates but that this does not follow from the earlier article. The article closes with an extensive comment by Dr. van Maanen.
