Douglas Self has a considerable reputation as an authority on audio power amplifier design, and is well-known for his rigorous, skeptical, and thoroughly practical approach to design. He is responsible for the concept of the Blameless amplifier, which gives very good distortion performance from straightforward circuitry.
Douglas was born in Suffolk, England, and studied engineering at Cambridge University where he achieved first-class honours. He then moved on to study Psychoacoustics at Sussex University. He has spent many years working at the top level of design in both the professional audio and hifi industries, and has taken out a number of patents in the field of audio technology. He gave the Power Amplifier Masterclass at the AES convention in Amsterdam 2008, and is currently mainly engaged in consultancy work. He is a prolific author and the books he has written include: The Audio Power Amplifier Design Handbook, Self On Audio, and most recently Small Signal Audio Design. Douglas is a member of the Audio Engineering Society.
