John Atkinson has been the editor-in-chief of US magazine Stereophile since May 1986. Before that, after attempted careers in scientific research, the teaching of science, and professional music performance and recording, he joined English magazine Hi-Fi News & Record Review in September 1976, becoming its editor-in-chief in October 1982. Concentrating on loudspeaker measurements in the 1990s, he has also been responsible for measuring all the amplification and digital products that are reviewed in Stereophile since 2000. In 2011 he was honored by being invited by the Audio Engineering Society's Technical Council to give the Richard C. Heyser Memorial Lecture at the 131st Convention in New York. For relaxation, he plays bass guitar in various ad-hoc jazz ensembles and has played on, engineered, produced, or mastered more than 40 commercially released LPs and CDs since the first in 1972.
