van de Gevel Marcel

altMarcel van de Gevel from Haarlem, the Netherlands, was born in 1970. When he was nine years old, an uncle gave him a Philips electronics kit. This started his interest in electronics, which resulted in him getting an ingenieur's degree (cum laude) in electronics engineering from the Delft University of Technology in 1993. Marcel has worked as a designer of analogue integrated circuits ever since, the first two years as a TWAIO at the university (working on very-low-power MOS circuits for pacemakers) and later in a microelectronics design company in Delft (mainly on RF chips for consumer equipment). Audio design has been his hobby since the 1980's. In 1997, he became a volunteer at the local broadcasting station Haarlem 105.

Marcel is an active member of the Dutch Party for the Animals. His favourite museum is Teylers Museum, a museum of art and science that dates back to the age of enlightenment. He lives together with his registered partner Connie van 't Hof and two cats, Harvey and Truffel.

A Tube based Phono Preamplifier
Marcel van de Gevel

altSince noise is always a very important factor in phono preamp designs, Marcel gives it much attention. He compares several tubes in this regards, giving methods for reliably measuring the noise performance of the selected devices including using modern PC-based waveform analysis applications like GoldWave. The final design is put through its paces showing good RIAA conformity, low noise and distortion and is audibly pleasing to listen to.
